QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

  • A WORD ABOUT OUR NEW AGE POLICY

For legal and liability reasons, the Global Game Jam Board of Directors has, after careful deliberation with our board members and legal resources, come to the conclusion that GGJ must remain an adult activity, only available to jammers who have reached 18 years of age or the age of majority (whichever is lower). Minors are only allowed to participate, if they are accompanied by their legal guardian at all times while attending the jam (subject to the rules of each location. Some may not allow minors under any circumstance). You can see the full age policy at the bottom of our legal page here globalgamejam.org/legal.

  • GLOBAL GAME JAM’S RESOURCES FOR JAMMERS

There are free Global Game Jam’s resources for jammers and free Unity Pro trial for Global Game Jam!.

    HERE

  • LIABILITY

The Global Game Jam is supposed to be fun and collaborative, with a goal to keep things very simple. We provide structure, guidance and help for all locations participating in the GGJ. As a rule, we expect that no team/makers of a game will illegally exploit others’ IP, and that in turn, everything created becomes part of the public domain. All participants agree that their participation in the Global Game Jam will hold no one liable for any loss or damage.

The Global Game Jam reserves the right to refuse to allow anyone or any jam location to participate at any time for any reason or no reason at all. This includes after the game jam has already started.

  • DO I NEED SPECIAL SKILLS TO PARTICIPATE IN THE GGJ?

Although having computer skills is helpful, code experience is not necessary. Designers, developers, artists and anyone is welcome to try their hand at making a game during the GGJ.

  • WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?

Plovdiv Game Jam is open to anyone interested in video games – professional, students or just people with talent! The idea behind the event is to get together a mix of people with different backgrounds, interests and skills, and motivate them to work together on an idea – to plan and execute the concept in 48 hours. Just for the sake of the challenge!

  • WHAT HAPPENS DURING PLOVDIV GAME JAM?

It begins on Friday at 12.00 HRS with registration. In the afternoon there will be casual talks from our special guests from the game industry – informative and insightful, they will be a spark of inspiration for the participants. The talks will cover core areas of game making, such as graphic design and animation, technical recommendations and the game industry as business. The event will be live streamed globally to the other Global Game Jam locations.

At 17.00 HRS we officially start Global Game Jam with announcing the theme of the global event. The participants group in working teams, each team registers and we’re rolling. Saturday and Sunday are days for work, as the venue will be open 24 hours until the final day.

The deadline for submission of games is Sunday, 15.00 HRS. That is followed by short presentations of all games and the winners will be selected with voting.

  • DO I NEED TO COME TO GGJ WITH A TEAM ALREADY FORMED?

Do not come to the Jam with a team. Everyone will have some time to think and pitch an idea. Collaborate with new friends or peers you admire.

  • WHY GET INVOLVED?

The Global Game Jam encourages innovation and experimentation. It plays not only a big role in creating new products but also for the exposure of the game industry to talents of other industries. It is an event that has been designed and created for all interested parties to participate and enjoy.

  • WHAT IS THE TYPICAL DAY TO DAY SCHEDULE FOR THE GGJ?

We meet on Friday, registration opens at 12.00 pm. We have prepared interesting sessions from our guests, followed by the forming of the work groups. Friday evening, Saturday and Sunday we make games. Sunday afternoon we upload the games on Global Game Jam’s servers. We finish with presentations of the games, vote and announcing the most interesting, creative and fun games.
Remember! Plovdiv Game Jam is not a competition – it’s a challenge!

  • WHAT EXACTLY IS A GAME JAM?

BBC news calls the Global Game Jam a ‘global phenomenon’. In a nutshell, the jam is 48-hour marathon, uniting game enthusiasts around the idea of collaboration.

  • RULES
    • Be nice! Be helpfull! Have fun!
    • You need to bring your own equipment (computer, software, etc.). Internet will be delivered by our sponsors.
    • Teams of registered participants can be formed by up to 6 people.
    • People can collaborate with the in-house participants only.
    • Plovdiv Game Jam is a part of Global Game Jam, so the participants must register at the GGJ here
  • WHY IS THE GGJ HELD OFTEN AT MANY UNIVERSITIES?

Schools have access to large labs and space that are not always available at studios. Educational institutions also have the best access to broadband Internet. But there is nothing exclusive about location types. Companies, Game collectives, community meetups and other types of venues are all welcome.

  • TIPS
    • We do not recommend that you come to the Jam with a team. Everyone will have some time to think and pitch an idea. Collaborate with new people or peers you admire.
    • Please remember to not reveal the theme online, before all the time zones have seen the Global Game Jam videos with theme presentation! Keep it a secret for the rest of the GGJ locations that haven’t been showen the theme yet.
    • Every registered participant has breakfast, lunch, dinner, coffee and water included in their admission. If you need anything more then this, you will have to bring it yourself, but we would like to ask you to keep it clean!
    • The Game Jam is an unique opportunity for people to push their skills and challenge their way of working- be open and flexible and remember that the jam is all about experimenting and having fun!
